Saint Junien (Frankreich), 21-05-2011
There were two of us: Nathalie and Dominique. We held an information stand at the entrance to the weekly market at Saint Junien, a small town of Haute-Vienne with 11,000 inhabitants. Under a heavy sun, we tried to raise awareness among passers-by and get them to think about their food consumption as a source of suffering, of distress and death for sensitive beings. In vain. We heard more than one time a "pff," and received large disinterest in the subject. Maybe it was because this is a farming region, but then again we got the same response: disinterest and absence of compassion for animals when we held an information stand against bull-fighting. Two or three conversations despite everything, but people spoke of whatever they felt like: - A slaughterhouse killer denounced the practice of ritual slaughter. He said he was very interested in animal well-being, that animals who come from organic farms are made to wait and relax in slaughterhouses with soothing sounds in the background! - A part-time vegetarian stops eating meat and then starts up again, like smokers who can never seem to quit. She is a vegetarian for her health as you will have gathered. - Another person signed our petition but kept saying that it was horrible to eat dog... I don't think she understood what she was signing. - And the best of the worst: a couple of elderly people asked us if we sold meat!! It was difficult to be satisfied with such a day, we had a feeling of rage in the face of inertia and of passivity before this daily violence... And last crushing blow: on the way home we had to follow a cart hitched to a tractor. From this cart, muzzles appeared here and there, the muzzles of calves that had just been separated from their mothers with the mooings of sadness that tear nights apart. At every instant, suffering and death present in the most perfect indifference!
